The Winter Solstice is the longest night of the year. Some people appreciate the meditative reflection offered by the dormancy of winter; for others, the darkness we have been living with since the Autumn Equinox may be wearing thin. Some may even be feeling the impact of the sun's absence on their emotional health. Either way, Yule is cause for celebration: after the darkest day, the light can only grow. There is still a long cold Winter ahead but we can endure it. we have done it before, after all –– and the light has always returned. Many holiday traditions involve a "winter witch" such as the woman depicted here. Cailleach in Gaelic mythology, La Befana in Italy, Frau Holle/Hulda in Germany, Perchta in Austria, La Christine and Madame Grands-Doigts in Louisiana, to name a few.
